Walk into any barber supply shop in Kathmandu and you'll face an overwhelming wall of jars, bottles, and tubes. Clays, pomades, waxes, creams, pastes, gels — every brand promises something different.
The truth is, choosing the right product comes down to three things: hold, finish, and your hair type.
Hold
Hold ranges from light (creams, serums) to strong (clays, hard waxes). The thicker and coarser your hair, the more hold you typically need. Fine hair can be overwhelmed by strong-hold products — a medium clay or cream is usually a better starting point.
Finish
Finish is about shine. A glossy finish (pomades, gels) reads as more formal, polished, groomed. A matte finish (clays, powders) reads as natural, effortless, modern. If you want to look like you tried, go for shine. If you want to look like you were born with great hair, go for matte.
Your Hair Type
Thick or coarse hair — common across Nepal — needs moisture and weight. Creams, clays, and balms are your friends. Fine or flat hair needs volume and grip — powders and lightweight clays add lift without weighing it down. Curly hair needs definition and moisture — curl creams and leave-in conditioners should anchor your routine.
Once you know what you need, the product choice almost makes itself.
